Umbria, long overshadowed by its Tuscan neighbor, but certainly its equal in beauty, can now lay claim to one of the most robust wine scenes in this corner of Italy. Our longtime favorite from deep in this rugged country? Francesco Annesanti, whose charming wines captured our attention on first sip.
Annesanti converted his family's farm to a humble winemaking facility (and by facility I mean "barn in the nether reaches of rural Umbria), where he meticulously handmakes his wines in almost impossibly small quantities. He makes wines for every occasion: bistro-tuned classics typical of the region like dark-fruited, savory Barbera and Sangiovese; sturdy, structured blends of indigenous white varieties like Grechetto, Malvasia, and Trebbiano; lesser-known but historically significant Pinot Nero (somewhat atypically aged in terra cotta amphorae and glass demijohn); juicy, red-fruited rosato that goes down all too easily; and one of our all time favorite pet-nats, whose eye-catching, whimsical label on the bottle perfectly communicates the undeniable charm of the juice it holds.
On Friday, our friend Nick Dazzi of Alluvial and Girasole Imports will join us behind the bar to pour a lineup of Annesanti's wine that captures that full spectrum. There's a wine for every palate in this lineup - don't miss it!
